SLOW SUNRISE for band (young players- High School or advanced Junior High) - 4 min. (composed 2007)

Written for the Selinsgrove Area Middle School Band, Amy Kenny, Director. Performance coming up in May.

SONG ON 243 for PIANO - 3 min. (composed 2006)

My mother Nancy Long celebrated her sixtieth birthday on November 30th, and I wrote this piece as a gift. She played piano as a child, and I wrote this to be on the level of difficulty of pieces in her old books. (Maybe she will get back into piano and play it!) Her address as a child (and her lucky number ever since) was 243. So, I mapped those numbers onto a scale, made a motive, and wrote the piece. It's simpler and prettier than my other pieces, so don't start here is you're just getting to know my music. But hey, if a composer can't write a piece for his mother on her birthday, what good is he?

ALIEN INVASION FINALE for orchestra - 4 min. (composed 2006)

I am once again happy to be involved in the semi-annual concert drama tour that the S.U. Orchestra and director Wiley create. This year's show is an educational concert about the elements of music. But, as always, there is also a story going on. In the story, an alien visits the earth in search of dinner. On her planet, music is consumed for nourishment. She comes to our concert looking for something to "eat", but finds our "foods" to be an acquired taste. We try to help her develop a taste for the music by breaking it down into its elements. This piece is a fun film-music imitation. While it's being played, the alien ship is taking off. If you've never heard any of my music before, don't start with this one!Score

MILLAY SONGS for soprano and marimba - 9 min. (composed 2006)

These settings of poetry by Edna St. Vincent Millay were written for soprano Allison Hooper. She will premiere them at Ithaca college in February.

Score

DE PROFUNDIS for clarinet and DVD (electroacoustic music with projected images) - 9 min. (composed 2006)

This is the latest in my series of pieces that employ projected texts. In this case, it's a setting of the traditional De Profundis text that has inspired so many composers. It was commissioned by Deborah Andrus. She performed it in several venues in the fall of 2006.

SLOW DANCE for violin, piano and vibraphone - 4 min. (composed 2006)

This piece was excerpted from the violin concerto for Jennifer Sacher Wiley to play on her recent tour of Iowa.

Score Recording (4MB)

DRACULA - underscore for production of this play at Susquehanna University (composed 2006)

This was a very understated and psychological production directer by Professor Douglas Powers. The actors wore masks throughout. The set was immense and very spooky.

CONCERTO FOR ELECTRIC VIOLIN AND WIND ENSEMBLE 15 min. (composed 2006)

This is a new version of my saxophone concerto. I reworked the piece for violinist Jennifer Sacher Wiley to play with the Penn Central Wind Band. There were many changes to the solo part from the original version, and the overal feeling-tone of the piece shifted substantially. It was premiered in July, with William Kenny conducting.

Movement 1, Movement 2, Movement 3

CONCERTO FOR SAXOPHONE AND WIND ENSEMBLE 15 min. (composed 2006)

Written for Gail Levinsky and the Susquehanna University Wind Ensemble, Eric Hinton, conductor. It was premiered by them in May of 2006 at Susquehanna University.

Score Movement 1, Movement 2, Movement 3

SONATA WITH WORDS for midi-capable piano (via Buchla "Piano Bar" or Yamaha Diskclavier) and interactive computer music/video system, 25 min., (composed 2005)

Commissioned by Dickinson College for pianist Jennifer Blyth, this piece employs max/msp/jitter and the Buchla Piano Bar to "set" text without a singer. The computer follows the pianist's performance via midi data and then presents the texts (sometimes whole phrases, sometimes just letters or syllables) at precisely the right time. Where the texts come from and why I chose them is a long story, so I actually built the program notes into the piece itself. It's a story within a story. We plan many performances next season.

Score 1. Prologue 2. Little League3. Five Years Old4. Time Travel5. Toccata Man6. We Knew7. Timber8. Epilogue

TOCCATA MAN RETURNS for 8-part trombone ensemble, 8 min. (composed 2005)

Commissioned and premiered by the Ithaca Trombone Troupe. It has 8 parts which may be doubled or tripled, or . . it's hard to imagine more than that! This piece develops several themes first introduced in the "Toccata Man" movement from my "Sonata with Words". The music sounds like it belongs with a movie about a some kind of brass-playing musical superhero.

Score (300 KB) , Parts Recording

ACADEMIC FANFARE (OR FINALE) for alto saxophone, trombone and piano, 5 min. (composed 2005)

Commissioned and premiered by pianist Maria Springfield, trombonist Dave Springfield and saxophonist Cary Brague. This piece is fast, virtuiosic, and at times, knowingly pompous.

Score (300 KB) Saxophone part (100 KB) Trombone part (100 KB)

A DYBBUK - underscore for production of this play at Susquehanna University (composed 2005)

I used my scordatura electric autoharps heavily in this to create the sound of a supernatrual cimbalom. I played the strings with bows, ebows, percussion mallets, and chopsticks. In a few parts I scraped them with my fingers and dramatically amplified the very quiet sound. Email me to request a complete disc of this musical underscore (about 45 minutes of music all together)

RONDO BEACH for studio orchestra (jazz ensemble with strings) 8 min. (composed 2004)

CIRCUS OF CIRCUITS for large percussion ensemble and live, low-tech electronics, 12 min. (composed 2004)

Written for and premiered by the Victoria School District Percussion Ensemble, Phillip J. Mikula, director. First performance, November 21, 2004, Percussion Arts Society International Convention, Nashville, Tennessee.

Score (1253 KB)Recording (10 MB)

FORTY-EIGHT MOVEMENTS for solo snare drum, computer music system, and live graphics, 20 min. (composed 2004)

Many large-scale classical pieces are divided up into small movements. The problem is, it is often impossible to tell where one movement ends, and another begins. In this piece, a video screen behind the performer displays the title exactly as each movement begins. Since some movements are (extremely) short, and some titles are quite idiosyncratic, the changing titles become one of the prime dimensions of the music. This piece is very visual, and doesn't translate so well as a recording. At my next performance, I will video tape it . . .

First performance, February 4, 2004, by Patrick Long, Stretansky Hall, Susquehanna University .

NOSFERATU an improvisational movie score for chamber orchestra, (created 2003)

First performance, November 2, 2003, Susquehanna University.

Score (452 KB) Four Recorded Excerpts (about 1 min. each)

COLOR CONCERTO for electric violin, orchestra with live computer video, 7 min. (composed 2003.

Written for and premiered by the Susquehanna University Orchestra, with Jennifer Sacher Wiley, violin.  This piece was a part of the educational concert drama entitled "Outside the Music Box".  This show was created by Jennifer Sacher Wiley.  The SU orchestra performed the piece several times on a tour of the Philadelphia area.

This is a software program created with max/msp/jitter, for use with the Buchla Piano Bar, that displays the phrasing, harmony and form of the Bach Prelude in C major, in response to a live piano performance.

QUINTET for piano, two violins, viola and cello, 24 min. (composed 2002)

First performance March 11, 2003 by pianist Jennifer Blyth and the Corigliano Quartet, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The performance was great, and it was recorded, but I don't have a copy yet.

I was very fortunate to have this piece played again! In 2006, the Ames Piano Quartet (joined by Jennifer Sacher Wiley) played the piece at S.U. They put quite a lot of work into, and really nailed it. Here's the recording.

Score (966 KB) Movement 1, Movement 2, Movement 3

DECEMBER CANTICLE for malletkat midi controller and computer music system, 7 min., (final version composed 2001)

INSIDE INTERLUDES for electric autoharp (played as a percussion instrument), 10 min., (composed 2000)

When you take the buttons off an autoharp, you just get this set of strings. If you put a pickup in, then retune the strings in creative ways, then play it with sticks, mallets and bows, you can get some rather unusual and effective sounds.

DISRAELI GEARS for wind ensemble, 14 min., (composed 1995)

This piece has some great parts, but it is full of significant flaws, and so I have never tried to have it performed. I think that it could be transformed into a great concerto for percussion ensemble and winds, however . . .

CONCERTO FOR AMPLIFIED MARIMBA AND ORCHESTRA, 35 min., (composed 1992)

This was my attempt to write a marimba concerto that was as huge and difficult as some of the famous piano concertos. Everyone told me that a piece this big wouldn't ever catch on-- especially if there was no piano reduction. Well, they were probably right. It was first performed (in version for marimba and tape) by me in 1992, Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music. Kristin Tait performed it the next year with an orchestra, but I don't have a tape of that performance.

TRIO for flute, vibraphone and double bass (Composed 1987)

This piece was never performed publicly, and that was probably okay.

and from the distant, distant past . . . here are some pieces from before I had any serious thought of being a composer. They were all "written" and recorded in the mid 1980s, while I was in high school. I have put them here in the spirit of nostalgia, full disclosure, and to amuse my students.

Piano Piece #1 - mid 80sVibraphone Pieces #1, 2 - (I had just bought my own vibraphone!) - mid 80s

The first non-pop music that I really knew about was jazz/rock fusion. At some point I bought a Fostex 4-track cassette recorder, and a Juno 6 synthesizer, and I tried my hand at recording all of the parts myself (except guitar, played by a friend who's name was, I think, Shaun) on these sophomoric imitations. I refuse to give the actual titles here, because, well, they were silly-- even for a 16 year old.

Pat Metheney Imitation Billy Cobham Imitation Cop-show Imitation

Dick Hyman Imitation Yellowjackets Imitation

These three pieces were made on my Dad's Mac Plus in the early 80s. I used the venerable "Deluxe Music Construction Set", which was one of the earliest consumer computer applications for making music.

IDEAS ABOUT THINGS

For concert music composers, traditional publishing is a bad deal . . .

There is a trememdous amount of intellectual property (scores and recordings) available here for free. Why do I give it away for free? Is it because I don't think it's very good? Is it because I can't get it published? No. It is good. I hope that it's good anyway. In my many years working as a copyist with well-known composers and publishers, I came to see that, outside of works for religous and educational venues, selling sheet music foolishly trades the substantial performance royalty income that can result from great availability of the music, for a meager number of sales, and a meager share of each sale. Publishers rely on composers to make a name, engrave the music, promote the music, etc, and then only award the composer a paltry 10 percent for each sale. Composition professors like to preach that the performers would be nowhere without the compositions, but after centuries of composition, there are mountains and mountains of good pieces that are NEVER played at all. Music doesn't wear out. I've engraved many great pieces for great and famous living composers that were performed only once or twice. Here's a sickening story-- after engraving pieces for these composers, I always send the masters to a publisher. Then, five years later someone finally wants to buy or rent the piece (always via the composer's personal influence or reputation), and the publisher has "mislaid" the masters! I can't tell you how many times I've had to resend masters to a publisher because the piece has finally received one sale. They lose the stuff. They've got millions of pieces, and they don't care about the composer-- they can't afford to care about the composer! Composers need to realize that performers bring more to the table than we do. They can choose from an unfathomable number of good pieces, many of which are in the library, or are available via photocopy. I am grateful to any performer who chooses to give some of their time and talent to my music. I just ask that they send a program!-- End of manifesto
