Berlin Set

[for Buchla Piano-Bar and interactive computer

media system]

composed 2005: 24 minutes

Commissioned by Dickinson College for pianist Jennifer Blyth, this piece employs max/msp/jitter and the Buchla Piano Bar to "set" the poems of Eric Berlin, but without a singer. The computer follows the pianist's performance via midi data and then presents the texts (sometimes whole phrases, sometimes just letters or syllables) at precisely the right time. Where the texts come from and why I chose them is a long story, so I actually built the program notes into the piece itself. It's a story within a story, and I like to think of this piece as a “pocket opera”.
